About Angela
Angela Higgins has worked in counselling for 25 years. She began her professional path as a befriender, supporting people affected by the Troubles in Northern Ireland. That early work led her to train and qualify as a counsellor and to a long career helping people through difficult times.
She is registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, BACP, and draws on client-centred principles in every session. Those principles - empathy, genuineness and acceptance - shape the therapeutic relationship and how she listens to each person.
How Angela works
Over time Angela added cognitive behavioural approaches to her practice. CBT helps people notice patterns of thinking and change behaviours that keep problems going. She uses this alongside a person-focused stance, choosing methods that fit the issue being worked on.
Her experience includes ten years as an addictions counsellor, four of them in a prison setting. She has also supported people through anxiety, panic, depression, trauma, bereavement, anger and relationship and family difficulties. In recent years Angela has explored complementary therapies such as reiki, sound healing and reflexology to support overall wellbeing.
She brings practical, straightforward work in sessions and listens for the small, achievable steps that help people move forward. Sessions are grounded and calm. She aims to create a space where people can talk through stress, life changes and painful experiences, and plan realistic next steps.

How her approaches work online and what to expect
Client-Centred Therapy focuses on listening and creating an accepting space. The counsellor offers empathy, honesty and respect while helping a person talk through feelings and make their own choices. This approach is useful for people exploring identity, grief, life changes and relationship concerns.Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, looks at links between thoughts, feelings and actions. It uses practical steps and simple exercises to change unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours that keep problems like anxiety or low mood going. This can be helpful for managing panic, stress, sleep problems and mood episodes.
Choosing the right approach is a collaborative process. The counsellor will discuss goals, try methods that suit the person, and adapt work as needs change. Clients and the counsellor decide together which techniques feel most helpful.
Online therapy offers a range of formats to suit different circumstances. Video calls allow face-to-face conversation, while phone sessions are useful when bandwidth or camera use is limited. Live chat and text-based messaging can support shorter check-ins, journalling-style work or clients who prefer writing. These options make it easier to fit therapy around work, family and everyday life.
