About Joonas

Joonas Vehvilainen helps people facing stress, anxiety, addictions, eating concerns, low self‑esteem, ADHD, trauma and abuse, grief, intimacy issues, anger, and depression. He also focuses on attachment problems, body image, codependency, fatherhood issues, and addiction recovery. Joonas speaks English and Finnish and practices in the United Kingdom.

He studied psychology at the University of York and completed a master's in neuroscience at King’s College London, where he looked closely at behaviour linked to addiction and mental health.

How Joonas works

Joonas then trained in addiction psychology and counselling at London South Bank University and spent time working in mental health settings in London. From 2016 he worked as a healthcare assistant in a mental health unit and as a recovery worker in supported accommodation.

He also worked part time as a counsellor for the NHS, Humankind, and WDP while completing his counselling studies. Those roles shaped how he supports people in practical ways rather than only talking about problems. Joonas has more than 1,000 hours of counselling work and became a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, BACP, in 2021.

He later ran his own practice and worked as an addiction therapist at Castle Craig Hospital in Scotland. In sessions he combines evidence‑based techniques with a warm, client‑centred style. He aims to help people learn skills, understand patterns, and find clearer ways to manage difficult feelings and behaviours.

Many sessions include practical strategies, discussion, and steps the person can try between meetings.

Online support options

How therapeutic approaches translate online

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, ACT, helps people notice unhelpful thoughts and choose actions that match their values. It is useful for anxiety, stress and problems that keep recurring. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT, focuses on how thoughts, feelings and behaviours connect and teaches practical tools to change patterns that maintain depression or anxiety. Attachment‑Based Therapy looks at how early relationship patterns affect current connections and helps people understand and change those interaction habits.

Choosing the right approach is part of the work. The therapist will talk with each person about their concerns, goals and what feels most helpful. Together they will try methods and adjust the plan so it fits the person's needs and preferences in a collaborative way.

Online sessions are offered by video call, phone session, live chat, or text‑based messaging to make therapy more flexible. Video calls work well for full sessions with face‑to‑face interaction, phone sessions suit shorter check‑ins or when bandwidth is limited, live chat can be useful for immediate reflection, and messaging lets people share thoughts between meetings. These options help people fit counselling around work, family life and travel without losing continuity of care.
